Meghalaya bus accident leaves 4 dead, 16 injured, search is on

Shillong, At least four people were killed and 16 others were injured when a bus proceeding towards Meghalaya’s capital Shillong from Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills plunged into a river, police said.

Operation is on to rescue the people who are tapped inside the bus, Bruno Sangma, the district police chief of East Garo Hills, said. 

He said the accident occurred late Wednesday night at around 11. 45 pm, when the bus skidded off the bridge and fell into Ringdi river at Nongshram bordering East Garo Hills district and West Khasi Hills district. 

The State-owned Meghalaya Transport Corporation bus started its journey from Tura via Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills on Wednesday evening. 

“We don’t know the exact number of people inside the bus and efforts are on to rescue to trapped inside the bus,” Sangma said. 

He said the injured passengers have been shifted to Rongjeng PHC and Williamnagar Civil Hospital.
