Meghalaya: Unidentified gunman killed in shootout

Shillong, One unidentified gunman was killed in a shootout with Meghalaya police in State’s West Garo Hills district on Tuesday night, police said.

Police said the shootout occurred in the Daldagre area near the prestigious Sherwood school after the unidentified gunman suddenly fired at the police team. 

Based on source information that some miscreants are trying to sell a weapon near the Daldagre village area, the police laid a checkpost on Tura-Garobadha road in route to Daldagre village. 

“The police team signalled one person who was coming on a motorcycle, but instead of stopping the man jumped off the motorcycle, took out a suspected assault rifle and fired at the police team in his attempt to evade arrest,” a police official said. 

The police retaliated in self-defence and subsequently the unidentified gunman collapsed and succumbed to his bullet wounds, the official said. 

Police recovered one AK-56 rifle, one magazine, 19 numbers of AK ammunition, including One round in chamber and one cleaning rod.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case and investigation is on to ascertain the identity of the unidentified gunman.
